The Curriculum
In the first chapter of tuesdays with Morrie, called The Curriculum, Albom describes a class about The Meaning of Life, which meets once a week to talk about love, work, community, family, aging, forgiveness, and death. There are no papers, no books, the class is taught from experience and oral exams are given at the end of each week. This class meets on Tuesdays. In this class there is one student named Mitch (One of the two main characters), and a professor. Although it is not pointed out in this chapter, the professor seems to be Morrie Schwartz. Morrie Schwartz was the favorite teacher of Mitch while he attended Brandeis University of Waltham, Massachusetts in 1979. This is revealed in a flashback to Mitch’s graduation day where, after the ceremony, Mitch and Morrie promise to keep in touch and Morrie tells Mitch that he is “[o]ne of the good ones” foreshadowing the lessons that Mitch will later attend.
