Summary of The Seventh Tuesday, We Talk about The Fear of Aging
The chapter The Seventh Tuesday of tuesdays with Morrie is about the fear of aging. Morrie is now having to have his bottom wiped for him, a symbol of complete surrender to ALS. Morrie says the only way he still stays positive is because of his drive to not conform with our culture, which tells us that dying is shameful. He now enjoys being returned to childhood, where everyone takes care of you, because he lost his nurturing mother at such a young age. Later, Albom talks about his fear of aging. Morrie, however, doesn’t buy all the emphasis on youth that is in our culture everywhere. He believes the youth are unwise, saying, “[who wants to live everyday when you don’t know what’s going on.” Instead of yearning for a younger age, Morrie embraces life. Albom ends the chapter with Morrie’s description of how he can be any age he wants personality wise, when it feels appropriate. He never regrets growing old.
