Summary of The Student
In the third chapter of tuesdays with Morrie, called The Student, Albom describes Mitch’s life after college. Mitch, a young man who moved to New York after gaining his masters in sociology, originally wanted to become a famous musician, for he knows how to play the piano. “But after several years of dark, empty nightclubs, broken promises, bands that kept everyone but me, the dream soured.” And after his favorite uncle dies of pancreatic cancer, he decides that time is precious. Mitch then works to become a journalist, and becomes very successful. He meets a woman named Janine and in seven years they get married. Mitch describes his promise to his wife to start a family, and not keeping it. Mitch then talks about the letters he has received from Brandeis University, and how he has been continually throwing them away thinking that they were asking for money, neglecting his promise to Morrie to stay in touch with Morrie.
