Summary of Taking Attendance
In the seventh chapter of tuesdays with Morrie
by Mitch Albom, called Taking Attendance, Albom starts off with
describing Mitch’s visit to London on work duties and his thoughts about
all the pointless commercialism and superstar gossip while he’s there.
Mitch ponders Morrie frequently during his boring London time. Morrie’s
schedule has been fitted to squeeze in time with everyone he loves before
he dies. “He had created a cocoon of activities-conversation,
interaction, affection-and if filled his life like an overflowing soup
bowl.” After the tournament which Mitch was in London to review ends, Mitch goes home to Detroit. Once Mitch returns, a strike begins at his
work. He is without a job. A job which has been his life for the last
decade or so. He calls Morrie and they decide that Tuesday is a good day
to get together and talk. Albom has another flashback, in which Albom
was only beginning to feel comfortable when talking to Morrie. They talk
at the college about the tension of the opposites, how there will
always be a choice between one thing that you want and one thing that
seems better for you.
